Rotary Shock Absorbers

Rotary Shock Absorbers

MSD supplies rotary shock absorbers for managing shock and vibration in rotary drill strings. Configuration requires rig, rotary-head, drill-string, and connection confirmation.

Product Descriptions

MSD rotary shock absorbers are rotary drill-string components used to help reduce shock and vibration transmitted through the drill string during drilling. The final configuration should be confirmed from the rig and rotary-head information, upper and lower connection requirements, drill-string arrangement, and mating components.

Rotary Shock Absorber Product Scope

Rotary shock absorbers are components selected for rotary drilling and rotary drill-string configurations. This page covers rotary-qualified shock- and vibration-control requirements; it does not define DTH shock absorbers, drilling jars, or generic oilfield and BHA shock tools.

During rotary drilling, shock and vibration can be transmitted through the drill string. A rotary drill shock absorber is used within the rotary drill string to help absorb or damp these dynamic loads. The final result depends on the actual drilling system and operating conditions, so the product should not be selected from its general name alone.

Position and Rotary Drill-String Matching

Rotary shock absorbers are typically positioned in the upper part of the rotary drill string near the rotary head, while the exact installation arrangement depends on the rig and drill-string configuration. The final configuration should be confirmed against the rotary-head side, upper and lower mating connections, drill pipes, and the rest of the rotary drill-string arrangement.

Connection compatibility cannot be assumed because two components are both described as rotary drilling equipment. The exact connection required at each end must be identified before a rotary shock sub or absorber can be technically confirmed.

Selection, Replacement, and Quotation Information

For a new rotary shock absorber requirement, provide the drill-rig model, rotary-head information, upper and lower connection requirements, drill-pipe and drill-string configuration, drilling method, hole size, application, and quantity. For mining or rotary blasthole drilling, the application provides operating context but does not replace connection and drill-string confirmation.

For a replacement requirement, provide the existing product markings, available dimensions, connection details, drawings, photographs, and sample information where available. MSD can review the supplied rig, connection, drill-string, and replacement information before confirming an available configuration for quotation.

Frequently Asked
Questions

A rotary shock absorber is a rotary drill-string component used to help absorb or damp shock and vibration transmitted through the drill string during rotary drilling. This page covers rotary-qualified requirements and does not define DTH shock absorbers, drilling jars, or generic oilfield and BHA shock tools.
Rotary shock absorbers are typically positioned in the upper part of the rotary drill string near the rotary head, while the exact installation arrangement depends on the rig and drill-string configuration.
Provide the drill-rig model, rotary-head information, upper and lower connection requirements, drill-pipe and drill-string configuration, drilling method, hole size, and application. These details allow the required configuration to be reviewed without assuming an unconfirmed model or connection.
Identify the exact connection required at the upper and lower ends and the mating component for each end. A connection should not be assumed from a general product name, rig category, or rotary drilling application.
Provide the existing product markings, available dimensions, upper and lower connection details, drawings, photographs, rig and drill-string information, application, and quantity. A sample reference can also be supplied where the existing configuration cannot be identified from the available information.
