Road Milling Picks for Pavement Rehabilitation

MSD road milling picks are carbide cutting tools designed for removing asphalt and concrete pavement during road repair, resurfacing, and rehabilitation work.

These round-shank milling picks work as part of the cutting system formed by the pick, retaining or clamping structure, holder, and milling drum. The correct product cannot be confirmed by the general name “road milling teeth” or “milling machine picks” alone.

Selection should begin with the pavement material, milling conditions, existing pick dimensions, holder arrangement, milling-drum information, and machine details. This provides a clearer basis for comparing the models shown in the current MSD specification table.

Asphalt and Concrete Milling Selection

Asphalt pavement and concrete pavement place different demands on milling teeth. Selection depends on the material being removed, its condition, the required milling depth and surface result, and the actual wear pattern observed during operation.

For asphalt milling teeth, provide whether the work involves surface removal, repair, or deeper pavement removal and note any mixed or abrasive material. For concrete milling, identify the concrete condition and any known impact or abrasion concerns rather than assuming that an asphalt pick is automatically suitable.

When one project includes changing pavement materials, send the application details for technical review. MSD can compare the available pick dimensions and geometry without treating a competitor’s application claim as an MSD product specification.

20 mm and 22 mm Shank Selection

The current MSD road milling picks range is organized into 20 mm shank and 22 mm shank options. Shank diameter is a primary matching dimension, but it is not the only dimension required for replacement selection.

Compare the published model, head diameter, head length, shank length, shank diameter, carbide base diameter, carbide tip diameter, and overall length with the existing pick or confirmed system requirement. A 20 mm or 22 mm label by itself does not confirm holder compatibility.

If an existing milling machine pick has no readable model marking, provide measured dimensions together with clear photographs or a drawing. Do not substitute an unlisted size or infer interchangeability from a similar product name.

Carbide Tip Geometry and Wear Review

Carbide tip dimensions, pick-head geometry, and the condition of the steel body should be reviewed against the pavement material and the wear seen on the current tooling. Different geometry can change how a pick engages the pavement and how load is transferred through the cutting system.

Photographs of used milling machine teeth can help identify uneven wear, tip loss, body wear, poor rotation, or holder-related damage. These observations support selection, but they do not replace dimensional confirmation of the new pick and holder interface.

Material details and performance expectations should be confirmed for the specific request before quotation or order approval rather than inferred from a similar-looking pick.

Shank, Holder, and Milling Drum Matching

Road milling picks must be reviewed together with the retaining or clamping structure, holder, and milling drum. Shank diameter, shank length, head clearance, retention arrangement, and the condition of the holder can all affect whether a replacement can be installed and used correctly.

Before ordering, confirm the machine model where available, milling-drum information, holder markings or dimensions, current pick model, and the relevant measurements. Similar-looking milling picks are not necessarily interchangeable, and MSD does not claim universal compatibility with machine brands or holder systems.

For replacement requirements, send photographs of the complete old pick and holder from several angles, with a ruler or dimensional drawing where possible. A physical sample or previous MSD order information can provide additional confirmation.

For a non-standard requirement or a replacement not represented by the current specification table, send the available drawing, dimensions, photographs, or sample to MSD for separate technical and supply confirmation.
