APPLICATIONS
Why Choose Us
MSD supplies diamond core drilling tools for mineral exploration, geological exploration, mining exploration, wireline core drilling, and geotechnical core drilling. This product line is limited to exploration and investigation coring in rock and suitable ground conditions.
The current range includes six product categories: Impregnated Diamond Core Bits, Surface Set Diamond Core Bits, PDC Core Bits, Core Barrels, Reaming Shells, and Diamond Casing Shoes.
Use this category page to compare each tool's role, understand how the components work together, and enter the correct product page for detailed systems and nominal dimensions where published. Final selection still requires confirmation of the formation, core-barrel system, required hole and core dimensions, rig capability, flushing, and operating conditions.
Impregnated Diamond Core Bits use synthetic diamonds distributed through a metal matrix. Controlled matrix wear exposes fresh cutting points, so the matrix, crown, flushing, formation, and operating parameters must be reviewed together.
Surface Set Diamond Core Bits place exposed diamonds on the cutting face. Diamond size and distribution, crown profile, formation structure, available RPM, and flushing conditions influence the suitable configuration.
PDC Core Bits use polycrystalline diamond compact cutters to remove formation material while leaving a central core. This category is limited to PDC core bits for exploration, geological, geotechnical, and environmental coring.
Core Barrels receive, contain, and support the recovery of the cylindrical rock sample during diamond core drilling. The current range includes Wireline, Conventional, and Chinese Series. Confirm the exact model, barrel length, hole and core dimensions, connections, and retrieval arrangement before ordering.
Reaming Shells are installed behind the core bit to help maintain borehole gauge and stabilize the lower core barrel. They support gauge control and system movement but are not the primary core-cutting tool.
Diamond Casing Shoes are fitted at the lower end of compatible exploration casing strings to help drill, position, advance, or seat casing in suitable conditions while maintaining the required internal passage for coring equipment.
The selected core bit cuts an annular path and leaves a cylindrical sample. The cutting mechanism may be an impregnated matrix, exposed surface-set diamonds, or PDC cutters, depending on the selected product and drilling conditions.
The core barrel receives and retains the cylindrical sample and supports its recovery. It must be matched with the bit, reaming shell, drill rods, and retrieval equipment as part of the complete coring system.
The reaming shell follows directly behind the core bit. Its role is to help maintain or restore the required borehole gauge and provide a stabilizing contact point close to the bit so the lower core barrel can travel through the maintained hole.
Where casing must be established or advanced before or during the coring program, a Diamond Casing Shoe can support the casing string in suitable near-surface, unconsolidated, broken, or mixed ground. The casing shoe is selected as part of the casing arrangement; it does not replace the core bit, core barrel, or reaming shell.
These components must be dimensionally and mechanically compatible. A matching nominal letter or gauge designation alone does not confirm the core barrel, bit, reaming shell, casing, connection, clearance, or complete downhole assembly.
Impregnated diamond core bits renew their cutting surface through controlled matrix wear that exposes new diamond points. Surface set diamond core bits use exposed diamonds positioned on the crown face. PDC core bits cut and shear the formation with exposed polycrystalline diamond compact cutter edges.
These construction differences provide a useful starting point, but they do not create a fixed PDC-for-soft, surface-set-for-medium, and impregnated-for-hard ranking. Rock hardness is only one selection factor, and similar hardness descriptions can conceal major differences in abrasiveness, competency, consolidation, fracturing, grain structure, and downhole variability.
The appropriate next product page depends on the required cutting action, formation response, drilling system, core-quality objective, available RPM and load control, flushing arrangement, rig capability, and prior field experience. Where ground conditions change between intervals, more than one core-bit type or configuration may need technical review.
Core-bit selection should consider rock hardness, abrasiveness, competency, consolidation, fracturing, grain structure, mineral composition, and expected variation through the drilling interval. These characteristics influence diamond or cutter engagement, crown wear, torque response, cuttings generation, gauge wear, and core recovery.
Available RPM, weight on bit or feed control, flushing medium and flow, drilling depth, rig power and torque, core-barrel type, and the required hole and core dimensions should be reviewed as a connected operating system. A configuration that works in one drilling program should not be transferred to another without checking these conditions.
Core-barrel selection also requires confirmation of the system, exact model, barrel length, core and hole diameters, connection, retrieval arrangement, rig, drilling environment, and formation. Confirm surface or underground requirements where applicable.
For replacement exploration drilling consumables, existing tool markings, measured OD and ID, thread or connection details, photographs, drawings, wear condition, and observed drilling behavior provide a stronger compatibility basis than a general product name alone.
The product pages organize available configurations by the systems relevant to each tool. Impregnated core bits include Standard Wireline, Thin Kerf, and Triple Tube groups. Surface set core bits include Standard Wireline and Triple Tube groups. PDC core bits include T2 Metric, T6 Metric, H Gauge, P Gauge, and S Gauge configurations.
Core Barrels are organized into Wireline, Conventional, and Chinese Series. The current model list does not publish complete core diameter, hole diameter, or barrel length values; confirm these and the retrieval arrangement for the exact model rather than inferring dimensions from its designation.
Reaming shells are organized by Standard Wireline, Long-Ring Type, and Metric Series configurations. Diamond Casing Shoes are listed for EW, AW, BW, NW, HW, and PW exploration casing systems. The corresponding product pages provide the current nominal OD, ID, core OD, bit OD, oversize, or other system-specific fields where applicable.
AQ, BQ, NQ, HQ, PQ, and related designations are sizes, gauges, or core-barrel system references, not separate product categories. Confirm the complete parameter row and matching tooling because the letter designation alone does not establish dimensional, connection, or assembly compatibility.
MSD is a China-based rock drilling tools manufacturer with 23+ years of manufacturing experience, ISO 9001 certified quality management, and exports to customers in 40+ countries.
The technical team can review exploration core drilling tool selection, standard systems, replacement requirements, non-standard dimensions, drawings, samples, and project-specific configurations before quotation and order confirmation.
This review helps establish the correct product category, system, dimensions, connection, formation basis, and operating conditions before a final available configuration is confirmed.
For a recommendation or quotation, provide the required product category; application; drilling system and size; target hole and core dimensions; formation hardness, abrasiveness, competency, consolidation, fracturing, and grain structure; drilling depth; core-quality requirements; rig information; available RPM and load control; flushing medium and flow; and required quantity.
For a complete core drilling system review, also identify the matching core barrel, bit, reaming shell, casing system, threads or connections, and any standard, oversize, Triple Tube, Coreliner, Long-Ring, or other confirmed configuration requirement.
For Core Barrel inquiries, include the series, complete model, quantity, required barrel length, target core and hole diameters, rig, drilling environment, formation, connection, and head or overshot information where applicable.
For replacement tools, send the existing product markings, measured dimensions, photographs, drawings, connection details, wear condition, and any observed gauge, torque, flushing, penetration, stabilization, or core-recovery issue. Non-standard requirements can be reviewed separately from the available technical information.
