MSD supplies core barrels for diamond core drilling. Select by drilling system, required hole and core sizes, rig, and working conditions.
MSD core barrels receive, contain, and support the recovery of rock samples during diamond core drilling. They work with a matching core bit that cuts around the sample and a reaming shell that helps maintain hole gauge. The listed range includes Wireline, Conventional, and Chinese Series. Confirm the exact model, required core and hole sizes, barrel length, connections, and retrieval arrangement before ordering.

CASE STUDIES
A core barrel is the sampling assembly used to receive and retain the cylindrical rock core produced during coring. The core bit cuts an annular path through the formation, while the barrel accommodates the sample for subsequent recovery and examination. A core barrel and a core bit perform different functions and are selected as matching parts of the drilling system.
MSD lists core barrels and overshots under Wireline Series, Conventional Series, and Chinese Series. Use the available-model table to identify the required series and complete model designation. The table identifies available models; it does not provide a dimensional drawing or establish interchangeability with another system.
In a typical wireline core barrel, the outer tube houses the sample-receiving inner tube assembly during drilling. The head assembly provides the landing, latching, and retrieval functions needed to position and recover that inner assembly. Core-retaining components help hold the sample during recovery.
After a coring run, a compatible overshot engages the head assembly so the loaded inner tube assembly can be recovered through the drill rods while the rod string and outer barrel remain in the hole. The overshot is the retrieval tool, not the sample container. Its engagement and passage through the rods must match the selected system.
Conventional coring generally requires withdrawing the barrel with the drill string to recover the sample. Do not apply the wireline retrieval description to every Conventional or Chinese Series model. Confirm the retrieval method and required components for the exact model ordered.
At the cutting end of a typical diamond coring assembly, the core bit cuts the rock and the reaming shell immediately behind it helps maintain borehole gauge and stabilize the lower barrel. The core barrel receives the sample, and the drill rods transmit rotation and feed while providing a circulation path. In a wireline system, their internal passage must also accommodate the inner assembly and retrieval equipment.
Select a core barrel for diamond drilling together with the required bit, reaming shell, rod connection, and retrieval equipment. Similar letter designations or nominal sizes on separate product pages do not by themselves confirm matching threads, dimensions, or clearances.
Core diameter describes the sample size; hole diameter describes the bore produced by the cutting tool. They are different requirements and must suit the selected barrel and bit combination. The current barrel table does not publish these diameters or barrel lengths, so provide the required values for confirmation rather than deriving them from the model name.
Core barrels are used for geological exploration, mineral exploration, and core sampling. The current Wireline Series entries are marked Surface & Underground, covering the listed WL models and variants as well as BTW, NTW, and HTW.
This marking identifies the drilling environments covered by the listed range; it does not mean an unchanged assembly is suitable for every surface or underground hole. Hole direction, rig arrangement, handling space, and the method of delivering and recovering the inner assembly need review. Surface or underground suitability for the other listed series should be confirmed separately.
In general coring terminology, a double tube core barrel has a sample-receiving inner tube within an outer tube. A triple-tube arrangement adds an inner liner, often a split tube, to support sample handling. These are general structural descriptions, not confirmation of the supplied construction of every MSD model. Confirm the tube arrangement and component list for the selected model rather than relying on a suffix alone.
Broken, weak, or weathered formations can make samples more vulnerable to disturbance or loss. Barrel selection should therefore consider rock condition, sample-quality requirements, core retention, flushing, and handling after recovery. A liner arrangement may be considered where appropriate, but it must belong to a confirmed compatible system.
Core recovery depends on the formation, bit selection, barrel condition, operating practice, and sample handling. A diamond core barrel model or tube count alone does not guarantee a recovery result.
Before use, inspect tubes, connections, sample-retaining components, and, where applicable, the head and overshot for wear, damage, or contamination. Check the specified assembly settings and retrieval engagement using the instructions for the confirmed system.
Keep fluid passages clear and protect tube ends and connections during transport and storage. Investigate abnormal retrieval resistance, repeated sample jamming, or changes in core recovery before continuing. Replacement parts and maintenance procedures should be confirmed for the exact assembly.
MSD is a China-based rock drilling tools manufacturer providing manufacturing experience, product selection support, and technical assistance.
For a core barrel assembly, MSD can review the required series and model alongside the core bit, reaming shell, drill rods, and retrieval arrangement. Drawings, existing product markings, and working-condition information help establish the required configuration and clarify the scope of supply before quotation.
Provide the series, complete model designation, quantity, required barrel length, target core and hole diameters, rig information, drilling environment, and formation. Include existing connection details and the head or overshot information where relevant, supported by photographs, drawings, or a sample if available.
Specify whether you need a complete barrel assembly, an inner assembly, an overshot, or replacement components, and confirm whether the bit and reaming shell are required separately. Contact MSD to confirm other sizes, models, or system requirements.
