Reaming Shells

Reaming Shells

MSD supplies reaming shells for diamond core drilling, with Standard Wireline, Long-Ring, and Metric configurations for gauge maintenance and core barrel stabilization.

Product Descriptions

MSD Reaming Shells are organized below by Standard Wireline, Long-Ring Type, and Metric Series configurations. Use the parameter tables to compare Size / System, Standard Outside Diameter, Oversize Outside Diameter, hard-metal strip availability, and long-ring dimensions where applicable before confirming the required configuration. Dimensions shown are nominal reference dimensions; manufacturing tolerances vary by reaming shell size.

Frequently Asked
Questions

A reaming shell is installed directly behind the core bit in the core barrel assembly. It follows the bit to help maintain or restore borehole gauge and stabilize the lower core barrel. The core bit remains the primary cutting and coring component; the shell supports gauge maintenance and stabilization.
Maintaining the required gauge helps preserve clearance around the core barrel and drill string. Excessive gauge loss can increase resistance, affect flushing and barrel travel, and complicate movement through the borehole. Shell wear should therefore be checked together with bit gauge, formation condition, and the rest of the core barrel system.
Standard and oversize shells have different outside-diameter specifications for defined system requirements. An oversize shell should be matched with the corresponding oversize core bit, required borehole clearance, formation, and core barrel. It is not a substitute for checking the complete drilling-system dimensions and compatibility.
The current tables list Standard Wireline BWL, NWL, HWL, and PWL; Long-Ring Type BWL, NWL, and HWL; and the published T2 and T6 Metric Series rows. They show Standard OD, Oversize OD, Hard-Metal Strips Available, and Ring Length B where applicable. Dimensions shown are nominal reference dimensions and require final specification confirmation.
Provide the exact Size / System, standard or oversize requirement, required outside diameter, Long-Ring requirement and Ring Length B where applicable, hard-metal strip requirement, matching core bit, core-barrel model, thread and connection details, formation, drilling depth, flushing conditions, and quantity. For replacements, also provide markings, measured dimensions, photographs, drawings, and wear condition.
