Read MoreA DTH shock absorber is a drilling tool installed within a DTH drill string to help reduce the transmission of vibration and repeated impact loads through the drilling system. In some drilling applications, this product may also be described as a DTH shock sub or shock sub.
During DTH drilling, the hammer, drill pipes, threaded connections, rotation components, and other connected parts operate under repeated impact, rotation, and changing mechanical loads. A correctly matched drilling shock absorber helps control the vibration transmitted through the tool string and supports a more stable drilling configuration.
The required model and configuration depend on the DTH hammer, connection type, drill string layout, dimensional limits, and operating requirements. A shock absorber should therefore be selected as part of the complete drilling system rather than by product name or hammer size alone.
DTH drilling tools are exposed to continuous percussion and mechanical stress. When drill shock and vibration are transmitted through the tool string, they may increase the load on drill pipe threads, tool joints, DTH hammers, rotation heads, and related rig components.
A suitable DTH shock absorber helps reduce part of this vibration and impact-load transmission. This can support smoother tool-string operation and help limit vibration-related stress on connected drilling components.

For 18–24 inch DTH hammer applications, MSD also provides in-the-hole and out-of-the-hole shock absorber configurations. These two arrangements have different dimensions and tool-string requirements, so the required configuration must be confirmed before ordering.
The model names indicate the available product series shown in the specification tables. They should not be treated as confirmation that every connection or drill string can use the same configuration. Final matching must be based on the actual DTH hammer and connected drilling tools.
MSD DTH shock absorbers are available for mining, quarrying, water well drilling, foundation drilling, construction drilling, and other rock drilling applications where vibration control and drill string protection are important.
They may be considered for deep-hole drilling, hard-rock drilling, fractured formations, changing ground conditions, or other operations where the drilling system experiences repeated impact and noticeable vibration. The need for a shock absorber and the suitable configuration should still be evaluated according to the actual rig and tool string.
Hammer size alone is not enough to determine the correct product. The outside diameter must suit the available drilling space, while the connection and overall dimensions must match the surrounding components without creating interference in the drill string.
Before selecting a DTH shock sub, the complete tool-string arrangement should be reviewed. The most important information includes the exact DTH hammer model or hammer size, the required in-the-hole or out-of-the-hole configuration, male and female connection details, drill string layout, outside-diameter limits, and length requirements.
Rig model, hole diameter, hole depth, drilling application, and rock formation can also provide useful operating context. Where the existing connection or dimensions are unclear, a technical drawing, thread information, product photograph, or current sample should be provided for confirmation.
