MSD 18–24 inch DTH hammers are available in N180, QL200, and N240 configurations for approximately 450–864 mm hole diameters. The available models use Ø400–525 mm outer diameters with API 8 5/8" REG, 8 5/8" API, or Hex 275 connection types, while their bit shanks, lengths, weights, hole ranges, and air consumption differ. 18–24 Inch DTH Hammers Overview

MSD offers three ultra-large DTH hammer configurations that collectively cover Ø450–864 mm drilling: N180, QL200, and N240. This collection supports buyers comparing 18 inch DTH hammer, 20 inch DTH hammer, and 24 inch DTH hammer options according to confirmed model parameters and drilling-system requirements.

The three models do not share the same hole range, bit shank, outer diameter, connection type, length, weight, or air consumption. Selection should therefore be based on the required hole diameter, hammer model, bit shank, connection arrangement, drill-rig capacity, compressor rated pressure, and compressor rated discharge capacity rather than the nominal inch designation alone.


Choose the Model by Bit Shank

The bit shank is a primary selection point because the DTH hammer and drill bit must use the corresponding connection configuration.

N180 DTH Hammer — Uses a NUMA180 bit shank.

QL200 DTH Hammer — Uses a QL200 bit shank.

N240 DTH Hammer — Uses a NUMA240 bit shank.

A similar nominal size or overlapping hole range does not automatically confirm compatibility. The required bit shank should be identified from the selected drill bit or existing drilling system. The corresponding hammer model, connection type, outer diameter, dimensions, weight, and air requirements should then be checked.


Model-Specific Hole Ranges

The three hammer models collectively cover Ø450–864 mm drilling, but each model has its own confirmed range.

N180 DTH Hammer — Ø450–600 mm

QL200 DTH Hammer — Ø457–610 mm

N240 DTH Hammer — Ø610–864 mm

The required hole diameter should be checked against the exact range of the selected model.

The N180 and QL200 ranges overlap from Ø457 mm to Ø600 mm. The QL200 and N240 both include Ø610 mm. These overlapping diameters do not mean that the models use the same bit shank, hammer body, connection type, rig configuration, or compressor requirement.

Where more than one model covers the target hole diameter, selection should continue by comparing the complete drilling arrangement.

The three models use different hammer bodies and connection configurations.

The connection type should be checked against the drill pipe, adapter, rotation-head arrangement, and other connected drilling components. The QL200 connection should retain the confirmed description 8 5/8" API, while the N240 uses a Hex 275 connection rather than an API thread.

The substantial differences in hammer weight also require confirmation of drill-rig capacity and the complete handling and connection arrangement before ordering.


Air Consumption and Compressor Matching

Air consumption differs significantly between the three models. Compressor selection should use the exact listed values for the selected hammer.

N180 — 63 m³/min at 1.8 MPa and 85 m³/min at 2.4 MPa

QL200 — Approx. 134 m³/min at 1.8 MPa and Approx. 183 m³/min at 2.4 MPa

N240 — Approx. 186 m³/min at 1.8 MPa and Approx. 259 m³/min at 2.4 MPa

The compressor should provide sufficient discharge capacity at the intended air-consumption pressure point. Compressor rated pressure and rated discharge capacity should be reviewed together with pressure losses in the hose, drill pipe, adapters, and complete air-delivery system.

The QL200 and N240 values are approximate and should not be presented as exact consumption figures. Air requirements should not be estimated from the nominal hammer size or extrapolated beyond the confirmed pressure points.

The listed 1.8 MPa and 2.4 MPa values are air-consumption reference points. They should not be interpreted as the complete working-pressure range because no working-pressure range has been confirmed in the final parameter table.


Choosing Between 18 Inch, 20 Inch, and 24 Inch DTH Hammers

An 18 inch, 20 inch, or 24 inch DTH hammer option should be selected according to the confirmed parameters of the N180, QL200, and N240 models rather than by nominal inch designation alone.

Hole Diameter — Confirm that the target diameter falls within the selected model's exact range.

Bit Shank — Confirm the corresponding bit shank for the selected drill bit or existing drilling system.

Hammer Body — Check the outer diameter, length, and weight of the selected hammer.

Connection Type — Verify the API or Hex connection against the drill pipe, adapter, and rotation-head arrangement.

Rig Capacity — Confirm that the drill rig and handling arrangement can support the selected hammer.

Air Supply — Check the listed air consumption against the compressor's rated pressure and discharge capacity.

The N180 and QL200 may both be considered for some diameters between Ø457 mm and Ø600 mm, but they use different bit shanks, body diameters, dimensions, weights, and connection descriptions.

At Ø610 mm, both QL200 and N240 fall within their confirmed ranges. Final selection at this boundary should be based on the complete drilling system rather than hole diameter alone.


Boundary With the 10–15 Inch DTH Hammer Range

The confirmed 10–15 Inch collection extends to Ø400 mm, while the N180 range begins at Ø450 mm.

The currently confirmed models do not cover Ø401–449 mm. A hammer configuration for a target diameter within this interval should not be inferred from nominal inch size or an industry sizing formula.

For these requirements, provide the exact hole diameter, drill-rig information, connection arrangement, compressor details, and drilling conditions so the configuration can be reviewed separately.


Common Application Directions

Depending on the selected model and project conditions, these ultra-large DTH hammers may support foundation and piling work, bridge or building foundation drilling, large-diameter construction holes, and other projects requiring Ø450–864 mm rock drilling.

Application suitability should be confirmed according to the required hole diameter, formation, hole depth, drill-string arrangement, connection type, drill-rig capacity, hammer weight, and available air supply.

The N180, QL200, and N240 should not be assumed to suit the same equipment or project conditions simply because they are grouped on one collection page.
