MSD offers six 6 inch DTH hammer models for Ø150–216 mm drilling: MSD6A, DHD360, QL60, M60, SD6, and MSD7A. All use API 3 1/2" REG threads and 30–60 r/min, with model-specific shanks, hole ranges, pressure ranges, and air consumption.

MSD 6 inch DTH hammers are available in MSD6A, DHD360, QL60, M60, SD6, and MSD7A configurations for approximately 150–216 mm hole diameters. The available models use Ø142–165 mm outer diameters and an API 3 1/2" REG connection thread, while their bit shanks, lengths, weights, hole ranges, working pressure points, and air consumption differ. 6 Inch DTH Hammers Overview

MSD offers six 6 inch DTH hammer configurations that collectively cover Ø150–216 mm drilling: MSD6A, DHD360, QL60, M60, SD6, and MSD7A. Their exact hole ranges differ by model, so the nominal 6 inch category should not be used as the only selection criterion.

All six models use an API 3 1/2" REG top sub thread and have a recommended rotation speed of 30–60 r/min. Their bit shanks, outer diameters, lengths, weights, hole ranges, working pressure ranges, and air consumption differ. The hammer model, bit shank, top sub thread, drill-pipe connection, compressor pressure, and compressor discharge capacity should therefore be checked before ordering.


Choose the Model by Bit Shank

The bit shank is one of the main selection points because the DTH hammer and drill bit must use the corresponding connection configuration.

MSD6A DTH Hammer — Uses an MSD6A bit shank.

DHD360 DTH Hammer — Uses a DHD360 bit shank.

QL60 DTH Hammer — Uses a QL60 bit shank.

M60 DTH Hammer — Uses a MISSION60 bit shank.

SD6 DTH Hammer — Uses an SD6 bit shank.

MSD7A DTH Hammer — Uses an MSD7A bit shank.

A similar nominal hammer size does not automatically confirm compatibility. Start with the bit shank required by the selected drill bit or existing drilling system, then confirm the corresponding hammer model, top sub thread, dimensions, hole range, working pressure, and air-consumption requirements.


Hole Range, Outer Diameter, and Operating Parameters

The six models collectively cover Ø150–216 mm drilling, but each model has its own confirmed hole range.

The API 3 1/2" REG top sub thread should be checked against the drill-pipe connection and any adapter used in the drill string. The model-specific length, weight, outer diameter, bit shank, hole range, working pressure, and air consumption should be checked individually in the parameter table.


Air Consumption and Compressor Matching

Air consumption differs between the six hammer models and changes with operating pressure. Compressor selection should therefore use the exact pressure and airflow values listed for the selected model.

MSD6A — 16 m³/min at 1.8 MPa and 23 m³/min at 2.4 MPa

DHD360 — 20 m³/min at 1.0 MPa and 28 m³/min at 1.8 MPa

QL60 — 20 m³/min at 1.0 MPa and 28 m³/min at 1.8 MPa

M60 — 18 m³/min at 1.0 MPa and 25 m³/min at 1.8 MPa

SD6 — 20 m³/min at 1.8 MPa and 28 m³/min at 2.4 MPa

MSD7A — 21 m³/min at 1.8 MPa and 28 m³/min at 2.4 MPa

The compressor should provide the required pressure and sufficient discharge capacity for the selected hammer's listed air consumption. Rated pressure and rated discharge capacity should be checked together because sufficient pressure alone does not confirm that the available airflow meets the hammer's requirement.

Air-consumption values should not be estimated from the 6 inch designation or extrapolated beyond the confirmed pressure points. Pressure losses through the hose, drill pipe, top sub connection, and any adapter should also be considered when reviewing the available air supply.


When to Choose a 6 Inch DTH Hammer

A 6 inch DTH hammer may be considered when the target hole diameter falls within the selected model's confirmed range and the drilling system can support its connection, pressure, and air-consumption requirements.

Target Hole Diameter — Confirm that the required diameter is within the model-specific range.

Bit Shank — Confirm that the drill bit uses the required bit shank.

Top Sub Thread — Check that the API 3 1/2" REG top sub thread matches the drill pipe or selected adapter.

Compressor Output — Confirm that the compressor can provide the required pressure and sufficient discharge capacity.

Rotation Speed — Confirm that the rig can operate within the recommended 30–60 r/min range.

Hammer Body Diameter — Confirm that the selected hammer body diameter suits the drill-string arrangement.

Application and Formation — Confirm that the configuration suits the actual formation, hole depth, and drilling conditions.

The confirmed 5 inch range collectively ends at Ø155 mm. The DHD360 and SD6 models begin at Ø150 mm, while the M60 begins at Ø152 mm, creating a limited overlap with the 5 inch category. In this overlap, selection should be based on the exact hole diameter, bit shank, hammer body diameter, drill-string connection, working pressure, and compressor output rather than nominal hammer size alone.

The specific boundary between 6 inch and 8 inch hammers should be confirmed after comparing the final locked parameters of both pages. It should not be derived from an industry sizing formula.


Common Application Directions

Depending on the selected model and drilling conditions, 6 inch DTH hammers may support selected mining blast-hole, water-well, construction, foundation, and large-hole quarry drilling projects within the confirmed Ø150–216 mm collective range.

The six models do not represent one identical operating configuration. Projects requiring Ø150–190 mm holes may use different hammer and bit-shank systems from projects requiring Ø203 mm or Ø216 mm holes. Model selection should therefore consider the exact hole diameter, bit shank, hammer body diameter, available compressor output, drill-string connection, formation, and expected hole depth.

However, all five models use an API 2 3/8" REG top sub thread, operate within a confirmed working pressure range of 1.0–2.5 MPa, and have a recommended rotation speed of 30–60 r/min. Their length, weight, hole range, bit shank, and air consumption still differ.
Check the compressor's rated pressure and rated discharge capacity against the exact air-consumption values of the selected model at the intended operating pressure. The five hammers do not have identical airflow requirements, even though they belong to the same nominal size class.

The compressor should provide the required pressure and sufficient discharge capacity for the selected hammer's listed air consumption. Airflow requirements should not be estimated from the 5 inch designation or extrapolated beyond the confirmed pressure points.
