Product Descriptions

MSD manufactures friction-welded drill rods for top hammer rock drilling systems. Our extension rods and MF rods feature weld joints stronger than the parent steel material, with precision-ground threads maintaining tight tolerances for maximum energy transfer. Available in round and hex threaded configurations (R32, R38, T38, T45, T51, T60, ST58, ST68) for holes 38–152 mm diameter and depths to 30+ meters, plus tapered hex rods (H22×108 mm, H25×159 mm) for shallow drilling under 5 meters. MF rod design eliminates coupling sleeves between sections—fewer joints mean up to 10% higher penetration rates versus conventional M/M rods (MSD internal test data). Lengths from 610 mm to 8,000 mm. ISO 9001 certified. Trusted by 500+ drilling contractors in 40+ countries.

Top Hammer Drill Rods: Complete Guide to Extension Rods & Tapered Rods

MSD (Zhuzhou Jingde Machinery Co., Ltd.) is a China-based rock drilling tools manufacturer with 23+ years of experience. We produce a complete range of top hammer drill rods, including threaded extension rods, MF rods, drifter rods, drill tubes, and tapered hex rods for mining, quarrying, tunneling, and construction applications.

Understanding Drill Rod Systems

Drill rods transfer percussive energy and rotation from the rock drill to the button bit. Choosing the right rod system directly affects drilling efficiency, hole straightness, and operating cost per meter.

Top hammer drilling uses two distinct rod systems:

Threaded rods connect via precision-machined screw threads (R32, R38, T38, T45, T51, T60, ST58, ST68). They are designed for medium to deep holes where multiple rods must be coupled together. Threaded systems dominate production drilling in mining and quarrying operations worldwide.

Tapered rods use a friction-fit taper connection (7°, 11°, or 12°) instead of threads. The bit simply slides onto the tapered tip and self-tightens under impact. Tapered systems excel in shallow-hole applications where fast bit changes and maximum energy transfer matter most.

Threaded Extension Rods & MF Rods

MSD manufactures threaded drill rods in two primary configurations:

Extension Rods (Male-Male) feature male threads on both ends. They require a coupling sleeve to connect multiple rods in a string. Extension rods are the traditional choice for long-hole drilling operations.

MF Rods (Male-Female) integrate a female coupling directly onto one end of the rod body. This eliminates the need for separate coupling sleeves, reduces the total number of joints in a drill string, and improves energy transfer efficiency.

MSD offers threaded rods in the following specifications:

Manufacturing Excellence: Friction Welding Technology

MSD's heavy-duty extension rods and MF rods utilize computer-controlled friction welding technology. This advanced solid-state welding process joins high-wear-resistant threaded ends with high-fatigue-resistant rod bodies at the molecular level.

The engineering challenge: threaded joints require extreme surface hardness to withstand repeated make-and-break cycles, while rod bodies require high toughness to absorb bending stress during drilling. A single steel grade cannot optimize both properties.

MSD's solution: We friction-weld specially hardened alloy steel tool joints to high-toughness pipe bodies. The resulting weld zone is stronger than the parent metal itself, eliminating weld-point failures even in demanding deep-hole operations.

Rule of Thumb: For holes deeper than 10 meters, always specify friction-welded rods. Integral rods may cost less upfront but fail faster under sustained fatigue loading.

Tapered Rods: Friction-Fit Self-Tightening System

MSD tapered rods use a precision-machined taper connection instead of threads. The operating principle is friction-fit self-tightening: the harder the rock drill hits, the tighter the bit grips onto the rod.

This system offers two key advantages:

Fastest bit changes — No rotation required. Simply tap the bit off with a hammer and slide on a new one. In secondary breaking and small-hole blasting where dozens of short holes are drilled daily, this saves significant time.

Maximum energy transfer — Solid hex steel with no threaded joints means zero energy loss at connection points. Every joule from the rock drill reaches the bit face.

MSD manufactures tapered rods in the following specifications:

H22 Tapered Rods (Shank 22×108 mm)

Taper angle: 7°, 11°, or 12°

Lengths: 610–8,000 mm

Weights: 2.20–24.74 kg

H25 Tapered Rods (Shank 25×159 mm with H25 hex body)

Taper angle: 7°, 11°, or 12°

Lengths: 4,000–5,500 mm

Weights: 16.65–22.1 kg

Precision Taper Machining — The critical factor in tapered system performance is taper tolerance. MSD machines tapered tips and sockets with micro-level precision to ensure near 100% surface contact between rod and bit. This guarantees instant lock-up to prevent down-hole bit loss, yet allows easy detachment with a simple tap when bit change is required.

Rule of Thumb: For hole depths under 5 meters in hard rock, tapered rods deliver faster cycle times than threaded systems. Above 5 meters, switch to threaded rods for easier rod handling and coupling.

Proven Field Performance

Canadian Limestone Quarry (MF Rod Efficiency): In an Ontario aggregate quarry, a contractor transitioned from standard T51 extension rods (with couplings) to MSD T51 MF rods. The reduction in energy loss at the joints immediately yielded a 12% increase in overall penetration rate. Furthermore, over a 6-month tracking period, the friction-welded MF rods achieved zero weld-point failures, significantly lowering the contractor's cost-per-meter.

faq & answer

Frequently Asked
Questions

Extension rods have male threads on both ends and require a separate coupling sleeve to connect multiple rods. MF rods integrate a female coupling directly onto one end, eliminating the need for coupling sleeves. MF rods reduce the total number of joints in a drill string, resulting in better energy transfer and fewer potential failure points. For deep-hole drilling operations, MSD recommends MF rods for improved penetration rate and reduced maintenance.
The choice depends on hole depth and diameter. Tapered rods excel in shallow holes (under 5 meters) and small diameters (under 45 mm) where fast bit changes and maximum energy transfer are priorities. Threaded rods are the standard choice for medium to deep holes (5–30+ meters) and larger diameters (38–152 mm) where multiple rods must be coupled together. Rule of thumb: if you drill dozens of short holes daily, choose tapered. If you drill fewer but deeper holes, choose threaded.
MSD manufactures drill rods in all standard thread types: R32, R38, T38, T45, T51, T60, ST58, and ST68. These threads are fully compatible with rock drills from Epiroc, Sandvik, Furukawa, and other major manufacturers. Contact our engineering team with your current rig model and rock conditions, and we will provide a competitive quote for a seamless direct-replacement trial.
Friction welding joins the hardened threaded ends with the tough rod body at the molecular level, creating a weld zone stronger than the parent metal itself. This is critical because threaded joints require extreme wear resistance while rod bodies require fatigue resistance — a single steel grade cannot optimize both. MSD's computer-controlled friction welding eliminates weld-point failures in deep-hole drilling, which is a common cause of unplanned downtime with lower-quality rods.
MSD offers tapered rods in 7°, 11°, and 12° taper angles. The 11° and 12° tapers are the global standard for modern rock drills in most rock conditions. The 7° taper provides a tighter grip and is typically used for extremely hard rock to prevent the bit from vibrating off. Always verify your rock drill's taper specification before ordering. MSD machines all tapers with micro-level tolerance to ensure 100% surface contact for reliable friction-fit performance.
