Tapered Button Bits

Tapered Button Bits

MSD taper button bits with hot-pressed carbide and anti-rupture skirt design. 5-6x lifespan of standard bits. For pneumatic rock drills in hard rock drilling.

Product Descriptions

MSD manufactures tapered button bits with premium tungsten carbide inserts for shallow-hole drilling applications. Available in 7°, 11°, and 12° taper angles to match standard tapered rod systems. The friction-fit self-tightening mechanism means the harder you hit, the tighter the bit grips — no threads required. Quick bit changes by simple tapping, no rotation needed. Ideal for secondary breaking, small quarry production, construction anchor holes, and bench drilling under 5 meters depth. Diameter range: 28–45 mm. Each bit undergoes insert brazing inspection and hardness verification. ISO 9001 certified.

Your Professional Taper Button Bit Manufacturer

MSD (Zhuzhou Jingde Machinery Co., Ltd.) is a China-based rock drilling tools manufacturer with 23+ years of experience, specializing in taper button bits, threaded button bits, DTH hammers, and complete top hammer drilling solutions for mining, quarrying, tunneling, and construction applications.

What Is a Taper Button Bit?

A taper button bit is a rock drilling bit designed for short-hole applications using a friction-fit tapered connection to the drill rod. Unlike threaded connections requiring rotation to attach and detach, taper bits lock instantly under impact and release with a simple tap—enabling the fastest bit changes in the industry. The tapered shank (available in 7°, 11°, or 12° angles) wedges tighter into the rod socket with every hammer blow, creating a self-reinforcing grip that never loosens during drilling.

Taper button bits are the standard choice for pneumatic rock drills in hole diameters up to 45mm. Common applications include secondary crushing, rock bolt support, roadway excavation, underground drifting, bench drilling, and tunneling support.

Top Hammer Energy Transfer System

The top hammer drilling system delivers impact energy from the rock drill directly to the bit face through a precisely engineered chain of components:

Rock Drill (Drifter): Generates high-frequency percussive impact and rotation.

Shank Adapter: Connects to the rock drill, absorbs initial hammer impact, and transmits energy to the rod. (Note: Handheld pneumatic rock drills like YT24/YT28 connect directly to rods with forged hex shanks.)

Tapered Drill Rod: Transmits stress waves from the shank to the bit. Available in Hex 22mm (7/8") and Hex 25mm (1").

Taper Button Bit: Converts stress wave energy into rock-breaking mechanical force at the hole bottom.

The friction-fit taper connection between rod and bit is the critical link—MSD taper bits feature precision-machined taper bores with 100% surface contact ensuring complete energy transfer and eliminating stress concentrations that cause premature failure.

MSD Design Advantages

Anti-Rupture Skirt Design with Proprietary Heat Treatment: Skirt rupture—when the tapered socket cracks under heavy impact—is the most common taper bit failure. MSD eliminates this through proprietary localized heat treatment: extreme hardness at the bit head secures carbide inserts, while exceptional fatigue toughness in the skirt section resists cracking. Combined with precision-machined taper bores achieving 100% surface contact, this design reduces stress concentration by 40%. MSD taper button bits maintain skirt rupture rates below 0.1%.

Deep-Seated YK05 Carbide Inserts: Insert fallout is the second most costly failure mode. MSD uses premium YK05 grade tungsten carbide with precision cold-pressing insertion. Our carbide buttons seat 1-2mm deeper than industry standard, dramatically improving retention. In highly abrasive hard rock, insert fallout rate remains below 0.05%, and overall bit service life exceeds comparable products by 20%.

5-6x Extended Service Life: Upgraded from standard flat drill bits, MSD taper button bits feature alloy steel construction with hot-pressed carbide inserts. This delivers 5-6 times the service life of flat drill bits with the same diameter, reducing bit consumption, minimizing downtime, and accelerating project completion.

Taper Button Bit Applications

Secondary Crushing: Breaking oversized boulders and secondary fragmentation requires rapid bit changes and reliable performance—ideal for taper systems.

Rock Bolt Support: Rock bolt holes, cable bolt holes, and ground support drilling benefit from the speed and simplicity of taper connections.

Roadway Excavation: Development headings, crosscuts, and drifting in underground mines demand maximum drilling productivity with quick bit-change capability.

Tunneling Support: Support hole drilling in tunnel construction requires consistent performance in variable rock conditions.

Bench Drilling & Quarrying: For small-diameter blast holes up to 45mm, taper systems offer faster rod handling and lower cost per hole than threaded systems.

When to Choose Taper vs Thread Systems

Choose Taper When: Hole diameter ≤45mm, shallow single-rod holes, using handheld pneumatic drills (YT24/YT28) or light hydraulic rigs, maximum bit-change speed required.

Choose Thread When: Hole diameter ≥45mm, deep holes requiring extension rods, using heavy hydraulic drill rigs, higher torque transmission needed.

Taper connections cannot be extended—if your application requires holes deeper than a single rod length (typically 2-4 meters), switch to a threaded system with extension rods.

Proven Field Performance

Underground Gold Mine, Peru: MSD 12° taper button bits (32mm & 34mm) with Hex 22mm tapered rods deployed in development drifting through highly abrasive andesite and quartz veins (hardness f=16). Previous supplier's bits suffered frequent insert fallout and skirt rupture.

Results: 35% longer grinding intervals—drilling footage between regrinds increased 35%. Zero skirt ruptures—no skirt failures during 3-month trial, eliminating stuck-bit incidents. 22% lower cost-per-hole—overall drilling consumable costs reduced 22%.

faq & answer

Frequently Asked
Questions

The taper angle determines grip strength and ease of bit changes. 7° provides the tightest grip for hardest rock with extreme vibration but is harder to detach. 11° and 12° offer easier bit changes while maintaining secure connection for most conditions. 12° is the global industry standard for general-purpose drilling.
Choose taper button bits for hole diameters up to 45mm, shallow single-rod drilling, and handheld pneumatic rock drills (YT24/YT28) or light hydraulic rigs. Taper systems enable faster bit changes. Choose threaded systems for larger diameters, deeper holes with extension rods, or heavy hydraulic rigs.
MSD taper bits feature anti-rupture skirt design reducing stress concentration by 40% (skirt rupture rate<0.1%) and deep-seated YK05 carbide pressed 1-2mm deeper than standard (insert fallout <0.05%). Combined with hot-pressed carbide construction, our bits deliver 5-6x service life of standard flat bits and 20% longer life than comparable button bits.
Choose Flat Face for most applications—maximum durability in hard, abrasive rock. Drop Center for medium-hard rock requiring hole straightness. Convex for soft rock prioritizing penetration speed. Concave for versatile performance with good straightness and flushing.
Yes. MSD supplies complete top hammer systems including taper button bits (7°/11°/12°), tapered drill rods (Hex 22mm and Hex 25mm), and shank adapters. Contact our engineering team for system recommendations based on your rock conditions and equipment.
