Single Cone Rock Bits

Single Cone Rock Bits

MSD GYD Series Single Cone Rock Bits for oil-well drilling, selected by bit size, IADC code, API connection, and formation requirements.

Product Descriptions

MSD GYD Series single cone rock bits use one rotating cone to break rock, unlike the three-cone arrangement of a tricone bit. Suitable configurations may be considered for slim-hole oil-well drilling and sidetrack requirements. Select the complete GYD model by formation, IADC code, bit size, and API connection, then confirm the applicable drilling weight and rotary speed before use.

Frequently Asked
Questions

A single cone bit is a complete rotary rock-drilling bit with one rotating cutting cone. MSD supplies this product as GYD Series Single Cone Rock Bits. It may also be called a mono cone bit or single roller cone bit; confirm that the requirement is for a complete bit rather than a replacement cone cutter.
A single cone bit has one rotating cutting cone, while a tricone bit has three. They have different cutting arrangements and must be selected for the formation and drilling assembly. Matching diameter or IADC code alone does not establish interchangeability or identical operating requirements.
They are used in oil-well drilling, including selected slim-hole and sidetracking operations. Suitable configurations may also be considered for further formation drilling during workover or remedial projects. Confirm the exact task, formation, clearances, and drilling assembly before selecting a GYD model.
Compare the formation description, hardness, abrasiveness, and interbeds with the recommendations actually listed for the bit type. Then identify a suitable GYD model in the Model Specifications table. The tables are not fully matched: 617 and 737 lack recommendation rows, while 527 has a recommendation but no listed model. Request confirmation where information is missing.
Choose the nominal bit size for the required hole diameter and check the Connection / API Pin on the exact model row. Confirm the mating connection and assembly clearances separately. Supply existing markings, photographs, or drawings when replacing a bit; diameter alone does not confirm connection compatibility.
Confirm the applicable drilling weight and rotary speed for the selected model and drilling assembly. Retain the published KN/mm and r/m units; approximate bit weight in kg is not operating weight on bit. Do not infer operating settings for 617 or 737 from another IADC row; obtain model-specific guidance.
Provide the complete GYD model if known, IADC code, bit size, API connection, and quantity. Include the formation, drilling task, planned assembly, intended operating conditions, circulation details, and clearance restrictions. Existing bit markings, photographs, drawings, and previous drilling records help MSD review the selection and quotation.
