| Your Compressor Output | Recommended Pressure Range | Best Hammer Series | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7–10 bar (1.0–1.5 MPa) | Low pressure | DHD series | Most forgiving at low pressure; ideal for small compressors |
| 10–17 bar (1.2–2.0 MPa) | Medium pressure | QL series, SD series | Balanced performance; most popular for general drilling |
| 17–25 bar (1.7–2.5 MPa) | Medium-high pressure | SD series, MISSION series | Higher penetration rate in hard rock |
| 25–30 bar (2.5–3.0 MPa) | High pressure | DHD380, SD8, MISSION80, large-diameter models | Maximum power for production drilling |
Rule of Thumb: Never exceed the hammer's maximum rated air pressure — overpressure causes piston damage and premature failure. Never run below minimum pressure — the piston won't cycle properly, causing misfires and poor energy transfer.
| Series | Pressure Range | Design Characteristics | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| DHD | 1.0–3.0 MPa | Widest pressure tolerance, robust piston design | Versatile applications, contractors with mixed compressor fleet |
| QL | 1.2–2.8 MPa | Optimized for medium pressure, excellent air efficiency | Water well drilling, general construction |
| SD | 1.2–3.0 MPa | High-frequency impact, aggressive penetration | Mining production, hard rock quarries |
| MISSION | 1.2–3.0 MPa | Industry-standard dimensions, wide parts availability | Drop-in replacement for existing MISSION fleets |
Rule of Thumb: If you're unsure which series to choose, start with QL for water well and general applications, or SD for mining and quarry production. Both offer excellent reliability across a wide range of conditions.
Valveless Design — MSD DTH hammers feature a valveless piston system that eliminates the most common failure point in conventional hammers. No valve means no valve failure, reducing unplanned downtime and maintenance costs.
No Tail Pipe Design — Our hammers operate without a tail pipe (foot valve tube), eliminating the risk of stuck hammer caused by tail pipe breakage in the hole.
Wide Pressure Tolerance — MSD hammers operate reliably across 1.0–3.0 MPa air pressure range, accommodating contractors with varied compressor capacities.
Full Series Coverage — DHD, QL, SD, and MISSION series in stock from 3.5" to 24", covering every application from small water wells to major infrastructure projects.
ISO 9001 Certified — Every hammer undergoes pressure testing, dimensional inspection, and performance verification before shipment.
APPLICATIONS
CASE STUDIES
MSD (Zhuzhou Jingde Machinery Co., Ltd.) is a China-based rock drilling tools manufacturer with 23+ years of experience. We produce a complete range of DTH hammers in DHD, QL, SD, and MISSION series, covering hole diameters from 90 mm to 864 mm for mining, quarrying, water well, and construction applications.
A DTH hammer (down the hole hammer) is a pneumatic percussion tool that operates at the bottom of the hole, directly behind the drill bit. Compressed air drives an internal piston that strikes the bit at high frequency, delivering impact energy directly to the rock face.
Unlike top hammer systems where energy must travel through the entire drill string, DTH hammers transfer 100% of impact energy to the bit regardless of hole depth. This makes DTH drilling the preferred method for deep holes (>15 m) and large diameters (>100 mm) where top hammer efficiency drops significantly.
Piston — The reciprocating mass that delivers impact energy to the bit. Piston weight and stroke length determine impact power.
Cylinder (Casing) — The outer housing that contains the piston and directs compressed air flow. Made from heat-treated alloy steel to withstand millions of impact cycles.
Chuck (Driver Sub) — The threaded connection that holds the drill bit in place and transmits rotation from the drill string.
Check Valve — Prevents backflow of air and debris into the hammer when drilling is paused.
Air Distribution System — Controls the timing of air flow to drive the piston cycle. This is where MSD's valveless design provides a critical advantage.
Conventional DTH hammers use a mechanical valve to control air distribution. This valve is the most common failure point — valve wear, corrosion, and debris contamination cause misfires, reduced impact power, and eventual hammer failure.
MSD DTH hammers feature a valveless piston design. The piston itself controls air distribution through precisely machined ports, eliminating the separate valve component entirely.
No valve to fail — Removes the most common cause of DTH hammer breakdown
Fewer moving parts — Simpler design means less maintenance and longer service life
Better debris tolerance — No delicate valve mechanism to clog or jam
Consistent performance — Air timing remains stable throughout the hammer's service life
Rule of Thumb: In contaminated drilling conditions (sandy formations, water influx, poor air quality), valveless hammers outlast valve-type hammers by 30–50% on average.
Many conventional DTH hammers use a tail pipe (foot valve tube) that extends below the piston. If this tail pipe breaks during drilling, it can jam the bit in the hole, requiring expensive fishing operations or even hole abandonment.
MSD hammers operate without a tail pipe. The check valve function is integrated into the piston assembly, eliminating tail pipe breakage risk entirely.
Zero stuck hammer incidents from tail pipe failure
Easier bit changes — No tail pipe to align during reassembly
Lower total cost of ownership — No tail pipe replacement parts to stock
Choosing the correct DTH hammer depends on three factors:
1. Hole diameter — The hammer must match the bit size. Model numbers indicate approximate bit diameter in inches: QL60 fits 6" bits (152 mm), SD8 fits 8" bits (203 mm).
2. Air pressure — Your compressor output must fall within the hammer's operating range. Running below minimum pressure causes weak piston cycles; exceeding maximum pressure damages the piston and cylinder.
3. Application requirements — Different series offer different characteristics:
DHD Series — Widest pressure tolerance (1.0–3.0 MPa), best for contractors with mixed compressor fleets or variable site conditions
QL Series — Optimized for medium pressure (1.2–2.8 MPa), excellent air efficiency for water well drilling
SD Series — High-frequency impact design for aggressive penetration in hard rock mining and quarrying
MISSION Series — Industry-standard dimensions for drop-in replacement of existing MISSION equipment
Rule of Thumb: When drilling in unknown formations, start with DHD series — its wide pressure tolerance handles unexpected conditions without hammer damage.
MSD DTH hammers are manufactured to the same specifications as premium international brands:
Premium Alloy Steel — Cylinder and piston machined from heat-treated alloy steel with optimized hardness gradient: hard surface for wear resistance, tough core for impact absorption.
Precision Machining — All air passages and piston ports are CNC-machined to micro-level tolerances, ensuring consistent air timing and maximum energy transfer.
Heat Treatment — Controlled quenching and tempering achieves 58–62 HRC surface hardness on wear surfaces while maintaining core toughness.
Pressure Testing — Every hammer is pressure-tested at 120% of rated maximum pressure before shipment to verify seal integrity and piston function.
Thread Verification — API thread connections are inspected with calibrated gauges to ensure perfect fit with standard DTH drill pipes and bits.
Brazilian Iron Ore Mine (QL60 Performance Test): A Minas Gerais mining contractor tested MSD QL60 hammers against their existing premium European brand hammers in identical conditions (banded iron formation, f=16–18 hardness, 18 bar air pressure). Over a 6-month evaluation period, MSD hammers achieved equivalent penetration rates (12–15 m/hour) with 38% lower procurement cost. Zero valve-related failures were recorded — a direct result of MSD's valveless design.
Russian Water Well Project (DHD350 Reliability): A Siberian drilling contractor deployed MSD DHD350 hammers in extreme cold conditions (-35°C ambient temperature). The valveless design proved critical — competing valve-type hammers experienced frequent valve freezing and misfires, while MSD hammers maintained consistent operation throughout the winter drilling season.
Valveless Design — Eliminates the #1 failure point in conventional DTH hammers for maximum uptime and reliability.
No Tail Pipe — Removes stuck hammer risk caused by tail pipe breakage, reducing fishing operations and hole abandonment.
Complete Series Coverage — DHD, QL, SD, and MISSION series from 3.5" to 24" in stock for immediate shipment.
Wide Pressure Range — 1.0–3.0 MPa operating range accommodates any compressor capacity from small portable units to high-pressure production rigs.
API Thread Compatibility — Standard API Reg threads ensure perfect fit with industry-standard DTH bits and drill pipes.
ISO 9001 Certified — Full quality traceability from raw material to finished product.
